I manage our trading subsidiary, which owns a number of generating assets that provide a financial return to support the charitable work of CES. As part of this, I manage the operations of a windfarm in the Scottish Borders where CES Trading owns a 1/3rd stake. I also carry out consultancy and project management work for private and community clients through CES Trading.
Most of my work involves developing and building new renewable energy and storage projects. I’ve had particular experience in off-grid systems, including as project manager for the construction of an innovative power system on the remote Isle of Canna in the Inner Hebrides, on a scheme combining solar PV, wind turbines and battery storage. This was a really fulfilling project for me, as I’d been working with the community there since 2009 to help the island move away from diesel as their main power source. The system won the Best Community Project Award at the 2019 Scottish Green Energy Awards.
The 7.5MW Fishermen Three windfarm which I also project-managed was one of the first in the UK to be developed by two charities, one of which is a housing association, and this won the Margaret Blackwood Award for Housing Innovation, in recognition of the significant numbers of new social homes which will be enabled by the income from the windfarm.
I’m an electric vehicle owner and self-confessed EV geek, always interested in new developments in this field, and looking out for ways that community groups can benefit from combining renewable generation with storage and electric mobility opportunities.
Outside of work, I’m often found on or in a river, canoeing and wild swimming. I’ve also recently started some woodworking projects; so far this is proving a time-consuming way to create a lot of wood shavings – and eventually a paddle or two!
