Cat McGinley

ICNZ Accelerator Officer

Accelerator Officer within the Island Centre for Net Zero team is to identify funding opportunities, secure resources, and conduct horizon scanning to support action on decarbonisation within the community sector.

I’m part of the Islands Centre for Net Zero team as an Accelerator Officer, focusing on the community sector, our main goal is to support action on decarbonisation. I’m responsible for identifying funding opportunities, securing resources, and keeping an eye on future trends through horizon scanning. It’s an exciting role that allows me to contribute to the important work of transitioning towards a net-zero future.

Back in March I joined Community Energy Scotland in March 2022 and I have worked on a portfolio of Orkney energy projects, including Net Zero Islands and ReFLEX.

I completed my undergraduate degree in 2017 in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Dundee. I then worked doing various jobs, from teaching to project engineering. In 2020 I started my Masters in Marine Renewable Energy, at the Heriot-Watt University Orkney campus. During my Masters I worked part-time as a renewable heat consultant specialising in government subsidy schemes like the Renewable Heat Incentive.

I love the outdoors, if I’m not in the sea, you’ll find me looking out at sea for cetaceans as part of a citizen science project. If I am indoors you’ll find me cooking an Ottolenghi dish or watching some obscure world cinema.
